What did you want to do when you were 16?

Civil Engineer. My favourite subjects in school were maths, physics, technical drawing and construction studies so a career as a civil engineer was something that interested me from a young age.

What kind of qualifications do you need for your job?

Third level engineering/management degree preferably but not completely necessary. Many Site Managers in the wind industry have progressed to their position with experience from a trades background or similar. I’ve certainly found value in my third level studies, particularly in relation to the geotechnical and structural aspects of wind farm construction.

What kind of career opportunities do you have?

Due to the wide variety of challenges each day, a site manager will find themselves involved in almost all aspects of the project build. This experience will usually lead to progression as a Project Manager, but not always. There are opportunities to specialise in one of the many elements of the project, such as civil, environmental, electrical and mechanical engineering, health and safety, planning, finance, and contract management. Skills gained in these areas are generally interchangeable with other industries also.

Best part of your working day?

Coordination meetings held every day between all management on site highlights the progress made for all work fronts. Great satisfaction can be taken from realising that the project completion is approaching, particularly when significant milestones are achieved.

Something that might surprise people about your role?

Every day is a school day. Each day brings its own challenges that develop your problem-solving abilities. These lessons learned are carried into your future projects to help streamline their completion.
